Kanbei (カンベエ, Kanbē) was a humanoid mononoke that was planning to fight and kill the Samurai Officers of the Izanagi Force.

Personality

Kanbei was a cold and cunning mononoke who aimed to destroy the Izanagi Force. He was going to do anything in his power to achieved his goals. He prefered to stay away acting backstage pulling the strings of his plan.

He showed no empathy towards his fellow mononoke and cared very little about them. He did not care about the death of two of them being murdered by Heisuke Ujii. He even used humans who willingly betrayed mankind and joined mononokes, with at least one of them being infiltrated in the Izanagi Force. Kanbei's first goal was to eliminate every high-rank samurai such as Heisuke. Kanbei was very machiavellian and manipulative, he pretended to be friendly with Dosan to ensure he would be useful for him, but after he was defeated by Dora and Kusanagi, Kanbei killed him without any hesitation absorbing his supernatural energy to be one step closer to his goal.

To Kanbei, humans and mononoke can't get along with each other and considered very stupid and pathetic the ideal of Dora and Kusanagi about fighting together as a team and trusting each other for being friends.

Kanbei was not reckless, and when he found himself in a situation he couldn't win he prefered to run. Right when he was trying to absorbe Dora and Kusanagi's energy, he inmediatly left the place when he felt Naotora's supernatural energy and learned at that moment he could not defeat her.

Abilities

Kanbei is a humaniod mononoke which are noted to be very rare to encounter.

• Immense Supernatural Energy: Similar to his comrades, Kanbei possesses incredible levels of supernatural energy.
• Telepathy: Kanbei has displayed the ability to telepathically communicate with their comrades. It is stated to be caused by supernatural magnetic waves.
• Cloning: Kanbei is able to create identical clones of himself able to act and attack by themselves across large areas.

Techniques

• Dark Hades Blast: Kanbei sets up an attack with several whisps surrounding the area, a powerful beam of energy then strikes from the center. The attack is said to be able to take down powerful samurai like Heisuke Ujii. The attack kills the user through self-detonation.
• Supernatural Energy Ore: Kanbei has access to an ore which is able to absorb other mononoke for their supernatural energy.
• Ninefold Fox Fire: Kanbei creates a blast of energy with the properties of fire. This fire can home in on targets and also split itself apart into multiple smaller blasts.

Trivia

• His name (Kanbei) derives from the Yokai "Kyūbi no Kitsune" being the "Nine-tailed Fox".
• In the English translation of the series, Kanbei was originally spelled as "Kanbeh" in Chapter 14 onwards. This was later changed in Chapter 23 to be "Kanbei" but in Chapter 35 the spelling is changed back to "Kanbeh"
